Amazing facts about mason bees

DID YOU KNOW….

Each female mason bee can visit up to 2000 flowers each day.

The male to female ratio in a population is typically 60% male, 40% female.

It takes only 400 female mason bees to do the pollination work of over 40,000 honey bees.

There are over 300 identified species of mason bees found throughout the world. (The species we work with is the blue orchard mason bee, Osmia lignaria)

Each female mason bee has anywhere between 20-30 eggs she can lay in her lifetime.

To provide a food provision for a single egg it can take between 15 and 35 trips back and forth from her nest and she can visit up to 75 flower per trip.

The mud they carry in their mouths to plug their nesting holes can be up to 20% of their total body weight.
